Interview with
Oddleif (vocals&guitar) conducted by Lasse Ruud in 2004
Communic is another new promising Norwegian band. Is this just a project or a band. Since the vocalist Oddleif also are the singer in Scariot?
Communic started out as my project band, but when Tor Atle (also in Scariot btw) and Erik signed in full time, we became a fully fledged band - with as much ambition as Scariot, and receiving just as high priority from all members. Since Scariot is in "slow mode" during long period of time - cause we don't have regular rehearsals with Scariot, only when there are new songs to rehears or a gig coming up.
You play aggressive and progressive metal, why this style?
We don't feel like we play a certain style. We have all different personalities within the band and have different inspiration and approach on the music - so the style and sound is not intended, it’s formed by the members. Another drummer and you get something completely different...
"We think every metal head will find something interesting in our music" - Communic. How can you explain this?
Well, in our music we are incorporating power, thrash, progressive and a bit of doom and groovy metal, and experimenting with lots of stuff when we create the songs, so we think every metal head will find something interesting in here. All the members are so diverse in their inspirations, so when we collide together in rehearsals, this stuff comes out...
How has the response on the demo been?
So far so good. Its a bit early yet, and only a limited amounts of disks has been sent out, reviews are dropping in, and peoples are e-mailing us after they have listen to the samples on our site, who wants to buy the demo - screaming for more stuff, but its not out for sale yet. We may put out some disks for sale or as giveaways on our site www.communic.tk soon.
Have you got in touch with any record labels yet? Which label do you guys want to get an contract with?
The main goal is to make some good music and have a lot of fun while doing it. A signing to a label would have been a bonus. If the goal was to be signed, then it would have been easier to make the music that the labels want, then your chances are bigger. The labels are pushing out to many bands that lack of self identity, and that make no sense to me.
How about gigs in the future, considered this yet?
Nope, we have decided not focus on gigs before we have an album out to support. Maybe some local warm-up gigs when the time is right, but not in the foreseeable future
What do you think about the Norwegian metal society today?
Im not following the scene to close. Reading a few zines that I think is cool, and I also like that the zines focus on the up and coming bands, instead of the major releases that you can read about everywhere. Except from that, I think everyone is expecting Black Metal when you say you are a band from Norway, but there are a lot of other styles coming fast in this area as well, but maybe its just easier to get signed when you play BM and are coming from Norway. It seems like the Norwegian metal is being more varied nowadays.
When will we hear more from Communic?
I think we have something to offer to the world of metal these days. I don't have any expectations but we hope to get our debut album out soon. When? I don't know, we have some shopping to do first....
Thanks a lot for the interview, feel free to add some last words to the BTB readers.
Go check out our samples at www.communic.tk if you wanna hear what the fuzz is all about.
