Equilibrium - Turis Fratyr
Reviewed by Tomas Skjørestad in 1/30/2005

- Finally...! Its here, and never has an album been going through my cd-player so many times. German masters Equilibrium’s debut album is here. Since i first heard theire s/t demo from 2003 I have completely been in love with this band. It started with some downloadable samples on the bands official website. I got the whole demo and my ears were stuck to the cd-player.
Now the follow up to the demo is here, Equilibriums first fullength album entitled Turis Fratyr. And what a stunning debut album this is! Never before have I experienced more beautiful and raw and catchy Viking/Folk Metal. Equilibrium doesn’t actually re-invent anything in their music, but what they do is done damn well anyway! Even though their style of metal has been done before, I can’t seem to find bands nowadays to compare them with. Imagine viking/folk metal with fast and catchy riffs, grim and grimmer vocals done by vocalist Helge Stang, and the main ingredient of Equilibrium, absolutely exceptional and majestic synths which fill the album with a very vikingish atmosphere. Turis Fratyr is a very strong candidate to the metal record of the year 2005.
A song like Widars Hallen is nothing but a pure masterpiece. The album has absolutely no boring or weak tracks. Turis Fratyr carries material for all metalheads!
The album blasts off with the fast, furious but yet melodic piece Wingthors Hammer, and continue to impress with a beautiful synth intro to Unter Der Eiche (My favourite from the demo). And on and on it goes, masterpiece after masterpiece, and I end up sitting in my chair just staring into the CD player trying to figure out how it is possible to create something so damn good! Strong debut albums have been done before, but this album is outstanding.
Don’t try to understand the lyrics, its all in German but who cares? You can see from the song titles what this is all about. And create your own world.. And believe me, its possible. Just listen to the last seconds of Widars Hallen and you know what im talking about. Turis Fratyr also come as a digipack with a couple of extratracks. And I’ll do what it takes to get one of those because this album is out of dimensions, and viking metal fans will L.O.V.E it! This album is absolutely something to watch out for in 2005!
