All good things are three, or what? In this case it’s definitely true. This is the third full-length album from Ram-Zet, and their first album in three years. Ram-Zet was actually founded as a one-man project back in 1998, but has since then established into a really steady band, both in studio and live. The first two albums were released on the Finnish label Spikefarm, but Intra is released on the Norwegian label Tabu Recordings.
I remember Ram-Zet pretty much struck me even first time I listened to them. I was really fascinated by the progressive guitar riffs, the eccentric vocals, the innovative arrangements and the intense atmosphere which Ram-Zet holds. Mostly, music that you pretty much gets from the first listening; you often get sick of pretty fast. But in Ram-Zet’s case I always find new interesting details in their music. I think this is even more remarkable in Intra than in the previous albums; all the hidden dainties within the advanced music of Ram-Zet.
The band labels themselves as schizophrenic metal, I think it fits both the music and lyrics (which are very important) very well! The things I like most about Ram-Zet is their way of using the female vocals as a supplement for Zet’s screaming grim vocals. In some parts it actually sounds like that they have conversations. Another important element in the music is without doubt the violin, played by Sareeta.
This really was a hard album to review, mostly because I’m pretty sure that I will find new stuff in this album for a long time from now. I knew this album was going to become something big since I heard them playing some of their new material at concert for about one year ago. I remember “Ballet” was called “Damnation Dance” back then, and this was a song that got stuck on my mind. Other songs I like very much are “The Final Thrill” and “Lullaby For The Dying”.
I think a lot of people who likes extreme metal, and metal in general will find a lot of interesting stuff within this album. So my conclusion would definitely be; Go and buy! You won’t for sure be disappointed by this fine release from Ram-Zet.
