Nominon - Remnants Of A Diabolical History
Reviewed by AJ Blisten in 2/24/2007
Swedish death metallers NOMINON hailing from Stockholm took form, lurking from the dark underground, back in 1993. They're still an underground metal force, now working on their third full length album due out to the metal masses some time in 2007, or maybe sometime early next year.
NOMINON is one of those band struggling with a little too much trafikk through the outdoor… NOMINON musicians have come and gone during the years that lead to a hiatus some years ago. Now they're back. The band's third release is in the works. The first one "Diabolical Bloodshed", came out in 1999, the second one, "Recremation" released in 2005. Now the rarity interlude release entitled "Remnants Of A Diabolical History's arrived. I have to admit that I think this is an uneven album. No wonder since it contains previously unreleased demo recordings, cover songs ("Live For Violence" - Voivod cover, "Spit On Your Grave" - Whiplash cover and "Decomposed" - (Repulsion cover) and re-recorded versions of some of the band's older old school thrash influenced death metal song.
One of the first bands popping up in my mind when listening til NOMINON is the latest Voivod record. Not that it sounds anything like the Canadian thrash masters, but the Swede combo's songs have some of the same original old school sound and feeling to them. The throaty rasp growly vocals adds a nice geniune thrash/death touch to the songs and the whole package is overall an enjoyable listen. Not top notch produced, polished or posingly technical, but definitely death metal the undergroundish way it was in the good old days.
Forget Gothenburg, go to the dark back alleys of Stockholm and look up NOMINON if it is the old metal spirit and old fashioned thrashy death metal riffery you're looking for.
