Ancestral Legacy - Trapped Within The Words
Reviewed by Jan F. Lindsø in 10/1/2008
This record found me at a record shop in Oslo. It was given away for free at the counter, so I thought I should grab one with me. Eddie Risdal, which also write for Beat the Blizzard, is one of the former members of this band. So it wasn’t a completely unknown band for me, except from their music, which I really haven’t had time to check out before.
People who know Eddie from the industrial death metal act V:28, which recently called it a day, won’t recognize his appearance that much here. Of course except from his deep vocals, which is present at both acts. Ancestral Legacy is more about symphonic black metal, that includes both growling male vocals and a clean female vocal. And as keyboards and female vocals are two elements I usually don’t like or listen to that much, it was a great effort for me to write this review.
To start with the positive, I want to brag about the sound, which is really good for this type of music. All instruments and vocals floats perfectly together, and creates the atmosphere that should be present in a genre like this. It’s also obvious that each artist knows their instrument well, and it makes Ancestral Legacy sound like a professional band. What I don’t find interesting enough is the material. To be honest I can’t really find what makes this release unique from the most of the releases in this genre. Not if that necassarily is a goal for them either. It’s not that I find this release to be any worse than the other, but I think they need the little extra to make them mingle with the big ones. This is a release that is balancing inbetween, and I think that they will need more releases to improve themselves.
All in all, I think that Ancestral Legacy is onto something, and they should keep holding on to it while they improve their material. People who are into bands like Leave’s Eyes and German gothic female-oriented metal bands should without hesitation check out Ancestral Legacy!
