Amorphis - Skyforger
Reviewed by Eddie Risdal in 11/11/2009

It's not very long since the brilliant "Silent Waters", and now Finland's finest have had their ninth regular studio album out for a few months. I've tried to give it time to grow, but the verdict is that it sounds like a bit like a "Silent Waters Part 2" to me, and as we all know the original is always better than the follow-up.

So, they follow much of the same recipe as last time, only that the songs in general don't have as high standards now. We find a few exceptions, as the album's definitive highlight "Sky Is Mine", which has an irresistible guitar melody. While "From The Heaven Of My Heart" to me sounds like a pale version of the title track from the last album. The biggest surprise, if any, is "Majestic Beast", which during the first minute or so sounds like a rip-off of Opeth.

Tomi Joutsen still sings very good, though some of the vocal melodies may appear a bit safe and predictable. The production is of course state of the art, and so is the instrumentation and songwriting, we're indeed talking about a band who's been around for almost 20 years! Though the drawback is that most of the songs aren't that memorable as their best moments. Still not bad and worth a buy if you're an old fan!
