Sulphur - Thorns In Existence
Reviewed by Linn-Elise Jenssen in 12/3/2009
SULPHUR is a Norwegian black/experimental/death metal band from Bergen. «Thorns In Existence» is their fourth album. If you bang your head, while listening to either death, black, thrash, or progressive metal, you will find «Thorns In Existence» interesting, cause it’s having all the genres, and it sounds terrific! The opening track, «Revelation», moves in the direction of Opeth. Track number two «True Father Of Lies» has got the Satyricon touch, in a 70's progressive setting. So tasty and classy the way this song is built up! It seems like SULPHUR just love to make variety in their music, and that’s why I don't get bored while listening to this album. The vocal is quite clear, and easy to understand. In the song “Hunting Sickening Seas” it really gets as hot as in hell. The vocalist twists his voice, from doing growling to start screaming, like the typical death metal vocal. Oh yeah! This is so cool!
“Thorns In Existence” also features violin and acoustic guitar in a national and harmonic piece of folk metal. SULPHUR’s guitar riffs, and solos, are great, both the slow, and the very fast picking, from low to high tones. The drums are heavy and powerful, like the usual revolving “helicopter sound”, but the drumming also have a lot of variation. Just as good as it can get! I really like the massive, fast sound of two guitars together, in the track «A Crimson Line», it’s like an amazing fairytale that makes me feel like “Alice In Metal Land”.
What a surprising album, is so full of variety. SULPHUR handles the death metal genre excellent! It’s like Christmas evening receiving both expected gifts, and some surprising stuff.
«Thorns in Existence» is a great album and just as varied as the Norwegian fauna.
