KadavriK - Wine Will Turn To Blood Again
Reviewed by Eddie Risdal in 1/30/2010
This is the German extreme melodic metallers' second album, and they have a hard task trying to surpass their debut. Now I've had this for a while to give it the chance to grow, but I must honestly admit that they don't quite live up to the expectations.
This is not a bad album at all, it's actually pretty good, the thing is just that "...Until The Die Is Cast" simply was even better. This time we get 11 tracks clocking in in just under 50 minutes and like last time we are put in the right mood with an intro before the first song "Hope Springs Eternal" kicks off. The line-up and studio is the same as on the previous album, thus we don't get any major difference in the sound or production. And this may be just the thing that makes it a point or two weaker than last time, as it feels a bit like "...Until The Die Is Cast Part Two", and like we often experience in the film industry; the ideas are recirculated and the plot isn't that good.
Let's get back to the small differences and highlights: "KrunK" is a short instrumental, melodies and instrumentation with a little twist. And also the albums' slowest song, "On The Edge To Lose It All" is worth mentioning, it's not completely a ballad (can you call any songs with black/death screams a ballad?) and has the only clean vocals on the album in the chorus, courtesy of their townmates in the band "We Set The Sun". This song has maybe some of the answer to what could make this an even better release, namely variation, as most of the songs are operating in the same speed and structure, while this one is stressing down a bit and also has a much simpler song structure. Sometimes less is more guys!
There is no reason to skip this if you are a general fan of melodic death/black metal, as this is better than the lot, still I'd recommend their debut for a starter.
