Rover - The Illumination
Reviewed by Eddie Risdal in 3/11/2010
"The Illumination" is the Oslo based rockers debut album, and it isn't even released yet. They've chosen a different strategy, and have recorded a whole album and spread it to both labels AND regulars, in hope to both get a deal and gain some attention from the man in the street. I'd say they have a very good chance of both, even if labels are getting more picky about who to choose in these downloading times.
They label themselves something like original and alternaltive hard rock and god knows what, but I'd simply say they play some rally good radio friendly rock. There aren't really any fillers here, and the rocking songs have massive and catchy choruses which quickly stick to your mind, but which doesn't wear out easily. Great, strong and crystal clear vocals delivered by Mr. Silver, often some distinct guitar work, sometimes heavily influenced by The Edge (U2, the way they use the delay effects on the guitar) and in general great and rich production, the only thing I miss is even a bit more punch in the bass and kick drum.
Normally I'd let the voiceovers annoy me a lot, but in ROVER's special situation, with an album not really released yet, they are very much forgiven. I'll buy the real deal when it's out in a proper way, and it shouldn't be too long till that happen. In the meantime check their music on Myspace, www.myspace.com/rovermusic
