Cathedral - The Guessing Game
Reviewed by Eddie Risdal in 7/6/2010
Doom metal institution CATHEDRAL celebrate their 20 years in the business with the double album "The Guessing Game", 13 tracks and just over 80 minutes of music. Since the last minutes of the closing track is silence plus a very much forgettable hidden track I feel that they could have tried to squeeze it all on one disc.
When that is said, what about the music? CATHEDRAL have over the years built up a clearly distinct sound which also is present on this album. Both Lee Dorrian's vocals and the overall sound are easily recognized. Lee still haven't learnt to sing properly, except for that there are a lot of different stuff going on here. The will to experiment and not having any boundaries is at full bloom. Alongside their groovy doom metal/rock we get serverd some more avantgarde stuff, jazzy stuff and something that's close to spoken word.
To point out some highlights I'll go for groovy stuff like "Edwige's Eyes" and "Casket Chasers" and a more epic track like "Death Of An Anarchist". A funny closure we get in "Journeys Into Jade" where Lee sums up the band's story and discography. Not one of the best songs though. And if I am to sum up their recent album I'd say it is very varied, daring, sometimes it works and sometimes not. Still pretty recommendable.
